Breeding Diary 2010

July

More Sybilla & Gongy ooths have hatched, much better hatch rates with these which is good

Another Sybilla ooth has hatched with a much better hatch rate, another Gongy has also hatched but with a very low hatch rate. Fingers crossed her 2nd will hatch more that her 1st.

A busy few days as regards ooths hatching as the 1st of the Gongy ooths has hatched, the hatch was about the normal that I have noticed of 25 nymphs.

3 more nymphs have hatched from the Sybilla ooth, lets hope the others hatch more, the 2nd Odontomantis ooth has hatched.

The 1st Sybilla ooth has hatched, just 2 nymphs so far. More to follow? only time will tell...

The 1st Acanthops.sp female has moulted to adult, a 2nd female miss-moulted and the 3rd doesn't look to far off now from the swell on her wingbuds.

The 1st Odontomantis ooth has hatched this morning, it wasn't the 1st laid after mating tho and could have come from the 2nd female not the 1st damn should have labelled better...

Several of the Acanthops.sp males have moulted to adult, lets hope the females aren't too far behind as I understand the males don't live too long, so they have now been cooled slightly from the females.

June

Ooths have now been laid by Gongys, Odontomantis & Sybilla so fingers crossed and wait to see if they hatch now

I have managed to pair up several different females Sybilla, Gongy, Odontomantis.sp & Hymenopus. The definately mated Hymenopus has laid a really deformed ooth but the other female that might be mated has laid a good ooth, so I've got to get her back into condition and try mating again. The Sibylla male has surived the 1st female so I will try and pair him with some of the other females that I have.

May

Unfortunately the Statalia maculata nymphs have prooven to be very very fragile and only a few have survived :(.

I was caught out by the Pnigomantis medioconstricta as I thought the female wasn't fertile but she turned out to be and I found some (well lots of) unexpected nymphs in a tub of old ooths.

April

The Statilia maculata ooth that was sent to me by Luke has hatched, there looks a good number of nymphs I hope they do well. They were rather fragile as 1st instar when I kept them before.

The 2nd Parasphendale affinis ooth hatched again with a good number of nymphs, the Creobroter pictipennis ooths are still hatching but as expected the number of nymphs emerging from them is decreasing.

March

The 1st ooth Euchomonella has hatched this morning it looks to be quite a good hatch, I will be able to tell later on when they have hardened off and are running about. The ooth took roughly 8 weeks to hatch.

Update on the Parasphendale affinis hatch loads more nymphs have now hatched from the ooth.

The 1st Parasphendale affinis ooth that was laid on my birthday has hatched today. It has only hatched 10 nymphs, I hope there is more to come from this ooth.

The 3rd Creobroter pictipennis ooth has hatched (laid 29th Jan) again quite a decent hatch, a few more got stuck hatching this time which is a shame.

Feb

The 2nd Creobroter pictipennis ooth has hatched (laid 20th Jan) from the looks there is twice as many nymphs that hatched from the 1st ooth.

The mated Parasphendale affinis has laid a decent sized ooth that has been put into a sweetie jar to incubate and fingers cross hatch. The 1st Creobroter pictipennis ooth has hatched only a few nymphs which are the 1st nymphs of mine this year.

I have now got the 1st Parasphendale affinis mated but it cost me 2 males as the 1st was munched. I have to keep her well fed now and wait for an ooth.

Jan

I think that I have both of the female Euchomonella mated and have the 1st ooth incubating, fingers crossed and only time will tell.

Which comes first the good or bad news? The bad I guess my solitary male Empusa fasciata had been with 1 of my females for several days with no mating seen and I found her munching him this morning, despite several flies buzzing around the cage. Such a shame as they are a lovely species so I'm not holding much hope for any ooths that she lays but you never know. The good news now and that is recently mated female Creobroter pictipennis has laid an ooth during the night so fingers crossed for that 1
